Well this may count a little bit as a spoiler even though it is kinda already hinted at. But The Uchiha clan is extremly good at genjutsu thanks to the sharingan, but more importantly, itachi is one of the best genjutsu user in existence (of those who are alive). So even if it is her strongest skill, it was bound to fail against Itachi. But to be fair to her, she probably didn't know of Itachi's expertise in genjutsu.

I don't get you. I know he's extremely good at it but is there any reason why people won't do it against him? He's good at using it but is he good at defending it? It's like yeah I'm telling you that Curry's the best shooter ever but I'm also telling you that many people can hit the 3 against him.

Well, not only is Itachi the most powerful genjutsu user alive, the sharingan, especially when mastered by an uchiha, makes you practically immune to genjutsu. It was already hinted in the series with Sasuke being able to acutely see through genjutsu with his sharingan, and so far he never even used a complete form of the sharingan (you can see only two droplets thingies in his pupils when he uses sharingan, as opposed to the three droplets in Kakashi's and Itachi's eyes).

Well it is just like ninjutsu, so everybody can use it. The sharingan just makes it easier because you just have to look in the opponents eye (No need for signs or stuff like that).
